Sally "Sally Starr"

"Our Gal Sal" (Nee Beller) On January 27, 2013 longtime resident of Atco, NJ. Passed away from natural causes. Age 90 years.  Beloved wife of the late Mark Gray.  Dear sister of Mary Boyd (Jerry), the late Juanita Woods, Mildred Beller and Helen Maras.  Also survived by her namesake Sally Hodgkins of FL, many nieces, nephews, and friends, especially Tom and Fran Garrity & family. Born Alleen Mae Beller in 1923 to parents Charles and Bertha Beller, she had her name legally changed to Sally Starr in 1941. Sally will be remembered for her long running TV show "Pop Eye Theatre" on WFIL TV Channel 6, which is now WPVI, for 20 years. On the two-hour weekday variety show, Sally introduced cartoons, Popeye, the Three Stooges, and celebrity guests to a generation of young people. She became recognized for her trademark spangled, fringed cowgirl costume.  In 1972 and Sally retired to Florida, where in 1987 a fire destroyed her home and her treasured broadcast memorabilia. While residing in Atco, Sally earned a living from personal appearances and selling airtime on her "High Noon" radio show that aired on Sundays. She hosted the Vineland show on radio station WVLT into her 80s. Until 2011 she hosted her radio show on Thursday evenings from Fairchild's Restaurant on WVLT 92.1 where she thrilled callers and restaurant patrons alike with her wonderful personality.  Sally was also a member of the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.  The family will receive relatives, friends, and fans Monday evening 5:00PM at the COSTANTINO FUNERAL HOME 231 W.
